Earlier this month, the Blue Jays signed Cesar’s younger brother, Maicer to a three-year, $9 million deal, but barring an injury, the elder Izturis is likely to spend most of 2012 at triple-A Buffalo.
Middle infield depth was an area of need for the Blue Jays entering the off-season.
Cesar Izturis would provide the Blue Jays with additional insurance at shortstop and second base behind his brother Maicer and the recently acquired Emilio Bonafacio.
Ryan Goins, who has played one season at double-A, would currently slots in behind Cesar on the organizational depth chart, highlighting the Blue Jays need for another major-league calibre option.
The 32-year-old switch-hitter played in 62 games in 2012 with Milwaukee and Washington, posting a line of .241/.254/.343/.598 with two home runs in 166 at-bats.
The numbers were not far off Izturis’ 12-year career average line of .255.294/.323/.617.
