MINNEAPOLIS — The Minnesota Twins have placed left fielder Oswaldo Arcia on the 15-day disabled list, due to a strained right hip flexor muscle.
Arcia was hurt in Sunday’s 13-3 win over the Chicago White Sox, and the move was made on Monday before the Twins hosted the Oakland Athletics.
The Twins recalled outfielder Eddie Rosario from Triple-A Rochester to make his major league debut. Rosario was on his way the ballpark in the afternoon and expected to join the team at some point during the game.
The 23-year-old from Puerto Rico had six extra-base hits, including three home runs, and 12 RBIs in 23 games while batting .242 for the Red Wings in his first Triple-A action. Taken by the Twins in the fourth round of the 2010 amateur draft, Rosario served a 50-game suspension in 2014 for a second positive test for a drug of abuse in violation of baseball’s minor league drug program.
Manager Paul Molitor was impressed by Rosario’s performance in spring training this year and his ability to play all three outfield positions. Rosario was picked ahead of outfielder Aaron Hicks for the promotion, in part because he hasn’t played in the majors.
"He hasn’t had a shot at this thing up here. We’re going to see what he responds like," general manager Terry Ryan said.
The Twins, though, haven’t given up on Hicks, who was their opening day centre fielder each of the last two seasons.
"I’m hearing some really good things about him. It’s important for him to just know that he needs to continue to do that over a little bit longer period of time," Molitor said. "His day could come soon as well."
Arcia is batting .276 with two home runs and eight RBIs in 19 games. He left in the fourth inning Sunday and was walking with a limp Monday.
"I kind of regret, maybe somewhat, that I didn’t maybe get him out of that game earlier," Molitor said. "He kept telling me he was fine. He looked like he was fine.’
