White Sox agree to terms with free agent catcher Welington Castillo

The San Francisco Giants are reportedly meeting with Giancarlo Stanton's representatives for a possible trade, and might do whatever they can to keep him away from L.A.

The Chicago White Sox have agreed to terms with free agent catcher Welington Castillo on a two-year deal worth $15 million. The contract includes a team option for the 2020 season.

Castillo hit .282 with 20 home runs and 53 RBI in 2017, his first season with the Baltimore Orioles. He led all major league catchers by throwing out 44.4 per cent (20-of-45) of attempted base stealers.

“Adding Welington benefits us both in the short and long term,” said Rick Hahn, White Sox senior vice president/general manager in a release. “He has been one of the more productive catchers over the last several seasons, and we believe his presence will have a lasting positive effect on our younger pitchers and catchers as they continue their development at the major-league level.”
