There was a time when Travis d’Arnaud and Brett Wallace seemed likely to evolve into contributors — maybe even stars — with the Toronto Blue Jays. Instead, the Blue Jays sent the prospects elsewhere in high-profile trades.
Both have encountered recent setbacks with their new organizations, however, as d’Arnaud broke a bone in his foot Wednesday and Wallace was optioned to the minor leagues Thursday.
Playing for the New York Mets’ Las Vegas affiliate Wednesday evening, d’Arnaud sustained a non-displaced fracture of the first metatarsal of his left foot. The catcher is in a walking boot and will be examined by team doctors Friday, according to ESPN New York.
Acquired in the R.A. Dickey trade last December, d’Arnaud entered the season as the #23 prospect in the sport, according to Baseball America. He had been hitting .250/.429/.472/.901 in 12 minor league games.
Meanwhile, the Astros announced that they optioned Wallace to Triple-A. He had struggled at the MLB level with 17 strikeouts in 26 trips to the plate this year.
The Blue Jays sent Wallace to Houston in exchange for Anthony Gose in July of 2010.
