PUEBLA, Mexico — Alyssa Jerome scored 17 points and 12 rebounds as Canada edged Brazil 72-71 in overtime on Sunday to win gold at the Americas under-16 women’s championship.

It’s the first time Canada has won gold in any age group at the Americas tournament.

"What a game. I’m incredibly proud of our girls, they kept their composure," said Canadian coach Carly Clarke. "We knew Brazil wouldn’t go away and it would be a tough 40-minute battle. It ended being 45 minute battle."

Hailey Brown added 14 points and nine rebounds for Canada while Roxane Makolo had 12 points, five rebounds and three assists.

Brazil’s Izabela Leite had a game-high 32 points and seven rebounds.

The Canadians hit their offensive stride in the second quarter and held a 29-23 advantage at the half.

Canada had a chance to finish the game late in the fourth quarter, but an off-balance three-pointer missed — forcing overtime.
