Joe Ingles is thinking of wearing Gordon Hayward‘s old jersey number come next season after watching his former teammate join the Boston Celtics in free agency.
“I might take his number,” Ingles said in jest to NBA Australia. “I might take number 20.”
Ingles, who’s known for his good humour, has worn No. 2 for the past three seasons. The Australia native, who re-signed with the Jazz this off-season, says that he’ll remain friends with Hayward but he “(doesn’t) like him for the time being because he left.”
Along with joking that he’ll wear Hayward’s number, Ingles also said that he looks forward to guarding his former teammate come the 2017-18 season.
“I’m definitely guarding him,” said Ingles. “I’ve already told Coach (Quin Snyder). I texted coach the next day and said between me and Donovan (Mitchell), we’ll give him a good game.”
The NBA has yet to release its schedule, but it’s safe to think Jazz fans will mark their calendars once they find out the date their team will go against Hayward’s Celtics for the first time.
