What the Raptors should expect from Lowry

After the Toronto Raptors missed out on Steve Nash, GM Bryan Colangelo quickly responded by reportedly acquiring point guard Kyle Lowry from the Houston Rockets on Thursday.

While Lowry may not be a household name in the NBA, the point guard is an ideal fit for what head coach Dwane Casey is looking to do with the rebuilding Raptors.

Lowry, a late bloomer in the NBA, averaged 14.3 points, 4.6 rebounds, 6.6 assists, 1.6 steals in 32:06 minutes with the Rockets last season. He is expected to take over as the starting point guard for the Raptors in 2012-13.

Raptors fans should be familiar with Lowry as he once scored 26 points against them.

Here is a 411 of what the Raptors are getting with Lowry:

Age: 26
Nationality: American
Height: 6’0
Weight : 205 pounds
College: Villanova
Drafted: 2006- 1st round (24th overall) by the Memphis Grizzlies

College career:

Lowry spent two seasons at the University of Villanova. Under Jay Wright, the Wildcats ran used a unique four-guard offence featuring Lowry, Allan Ray, Mike Nardi and Randy Foye.

He broke out in his sophomore season at Villanova, where he started 31 of 33 games. They finished with a 25-4 regular season record, which tied them for first place in the conference.

Lowry helped lead the Wildcats to an Elite Eight appearance where the team fell short to the eventual champion Florida Gators.

Here is a video of Lowry’s best highlights from two years at Villanova:

NBA career:

Lowry was only able to play 10 games in his rookie season with Memphis before undergoing season-ending surgery on a broken wrist.

He struggled to find his footing during his three seasons with the Grizzlies before the team shipped him to Houston in a three-team deal with the Orlando Magic in 2009.

Once Lowry got to Houston, he showed steady improvement. His stats progressed in each of four seasons with the Rockets.

He finally lived up to expectations in 2010-11, where he started 71 of 75 games with the Rockets. He drastically improved his points and assists per game when he finally got the opportunity to start. He had a career-high 18 assists that season along with his first career triple-double.

The Raptors reportedly tried to acquire Lowry during the NBA Draft but wouldn’t give up the first-round pick they used to select Terrence Ross.

Lowry is a career .783 free throw shooter and had a .375 average from the three point line over the past two seasons. He will fit perfectly in Casey’s system as he is a tough defender and can drive to the basket and open up the floor for his teammates.
