Former UCLA bad boy Reeves Nelson has received an invitation to the Los Angeles Lakers training camp according to the Los Angeles Times.

Nelson went undrafted in June after being dismissed from the UCLA program in December following a pair of suspensions and a Sports Illustrated article which painted him as a bully. He is suing SI over the article.

Nelson’s one-year, $700,000 contract will not be guaranteed according to the Los Angeles Times.

“I’m very grateful,” Nelson told the paper. “It’s nice because I’m pretty sure that virtually no one thought I could get this far, so it’s pretty gratifying.”

Nelson played on the Lakers’ summer league team in Las Vegas but was glued to the bench for the first few games of the tournament.

“I didn’t get to play very much in the first three games, and after the fact they told me that it was testing my sportsmanship,” Nelson said. “It was concerning everything that happened at UCLA and they said I did about as good as they ever could have expected.”
