If you were watching the Raptors lose to the Charlotte Bobcats on Wednesday night, you were probably wondering why Michael Kidd-Gilchrist was not called for a foul against Andrea Bargnani on the final possession of the game.
You were right to wonder.
On Thursday evening, the NBA’s official website posted an update that confirmed the missed call in the game.
On the final possession of Charlotte’s 98-97 win over Toronto on Nov. 21, the game officials missed a foul by Charlotte’s Michael Kidd-Gilchrist against Toronto’s Andrea Bargnani on a jump shot. Bargnani should have been given two free throws and the clock stopped with approximately 2.4 seconds remaining in the game.
This update was also tweeted by the NBA’s @NBAOfficial Twitter account, which sends out updates from the league office on officiating and clarifications.
In a game that the Bobcats won by a score of 98-97, that blown call and the free throws that would have resulted, could have changed everything.
Unfortunately for Toronto, there’s no way to go back in time and correct the slight.
While the Raptors coaching staff and players were visibly frustrated at the non-call at the end of the game, everyone was careful not to say anything that would result in a fine. Shortly after the NBA’s tweet went out, Ed Davis retweeted the original tweet and added “Not the first” in front of it.

It’s no secret that the Raptors have been unhappy with the officiating on various occasions this season. As Ryan Wolstat of the Toronto Sun reported, this incident wasn’t the only time that the team has sent tape to the league for reviewing.
Wolstat also reports that, “This isn’t the first time according to multiple sources, that the league admitted it got something wrong involving the Raptors this year.”
While the admission doesn’t change the amount of games in the loss column for the Raptors, it could mean that officials will be more willing to make the call next time. That a rookie in Kidd-Gilchrist got the benefit of the doubt over a veteran like Bargnani is pretty strange for the NBA. Then again, you often have to earn respect in this league and respect comes with winning, something the Bobcats have done more of than Toronto so far this season.
(Sidenote: Charlotte is currently in third place in the Eastern Conference. Yes, it’s early, but still).
With the Raptors in Detroit to take on the Pistons on Friday evening, we’ll see if anyone other than Davis wants to comment on the NBA owning up to their mistake.
