Estimated Return Date: 2017-11-30
Payne will undergo surgery on his right foot and is expected to be sidelined until late November, Shams Charania of Yahoo! Sports reports.
Payne dealt with a fractured right foot at the start of the 2016-17 campaign, though it remains to be seen if this is some sort of aggravation or if it's a new injury entirely. Either way, Payne will sit out roughly the next three months while undergoing extensive rehabilitation. Payne was likely going to be just a depth option at point guard during the upcoming season, but his absence could open more time for a guy like Jerian Grant, who should come off the bench behind projected starter Kris Dunn. That said, new addition Zach LaVine (knee) could also see time at point guard as well once he's at full strength.
