Toronto Raptors president and general manager Bryan Colangelo is likely to offer a contract extension to Rudy Gay this summer, a source told Yahoo! Sports basketball writer Marc J. Spears.
Gay, who was acquired from the Memphis Grizzlies in a three-way trade in January, currently has two years remaining on his contract which will pay him $37 million. If an extension is offered, CBA rules will not allow him to take a pay cut and he can only be offered a two-year extension.
The Grizzlies traded Gay to try and get their financial books in order, but Gay feels as though the new ownership group which took over the franchise last summer acted hastily.
“You have to give me a chance to see if I’m worth that,” Gay said of his contract.
Gay, who also told the site that he needed a change of scenery, could see the writing on the wall once Robert Pera took over the team as whispers that he was available began almost instantly.
“With (new management), I don’t think anybody’s comfortable,” Gay said. “They’re rookie owners. They come in there and they want it their own way, and you can’t blame them for that. But it’s a player’s league.”
While Gay says he likes Toronto he will likely wait and see what other changes are made to the roster before he signs an extension.
“Last time I left it up to my agent and it worked for me,” Gay said. “I love the city. I think the team has a lot of potential. The organization is great. (Colangelo) is here and he is watching every step trying to make this team better.”
