There have been plenty of takes about LaVar Ball since he burst into public consciousness, most of which have been negative. And with his son Lonzo making his NBA debut with the Los Angeles Lakers last week, the criticism has seemingly intensified.
However on Tuesday, Washington Wizards head coach Scott Brooks shared an alternate view on Ball.
“People talk about [Lonzo’s] dad all the time. Hey, I mean, my father left me at two,” Brooks said, according to Candace Buckner of The Washington Post. “I would love to have my father around like [LaVar] is around and talk to him and pump me up with confidence. To me, that’s every son’s dream. And for some reason he gets criticized.”
Lonzo was selected by the Lakers with the second overall pick of the 2017 NBA Draft. His father has routinely made news since with wild comments and comparisons that have aggravated many, to say the least. Just last week he harshly criticized Patrick Beverley of the Clippers.
“No question, he’s a little [ambitious] at times [with] what he says,” said Brooks of LaVar. “But he’s around his son. I have no problem with that. And maybe he could temper it a little bit, but I would’ve loved to have my father do that.”
The Lakers host the Wizards Wednesday evening at 10:30 p.m. ET.
