In his own words: A dual-sport athlete as a youngster, Liston seemingly enjoys pressure situations in sports as a goaltender in hockey and a pitcher in baseball. Liston represented his province in a few national youth baseball tournaments before making the decision to stick with hockey.
Liston was drafted in the third round, 57th overall by the Wheat Kings in the 2008 WHL bantam draft. Although he didn't play as a 16-year-old in the WHL, as the Wheat Kings went with the experienced duo of Jacob DeSerres and Andrew Hayes last season, Liston was the team's third goaltender and joined the Wheat Kings for the playoffs and MasterCard Memorial Cup.
Liston represented Team Pacific at the 2010 World Under-17 Hockey Challenge. His team finished fifth in the tournament. Liston posted a 2.67 goals against average and a .892 save percentage with one shutout in three games played.
He split time through most of this season with fellow rookie Corbin Boes in the Brandon crease. Liston was named to the CHL/NHL Top Prospects Game where he stopped all 18 shots he faced, helping lead Team Orr to a 7-1 win over Team Cherry in the battle of the CHL's top draft-eligible prospects.
Liston was rated ninth overall among North American-playing goaltenders for the upcoming draft by the NHL's Central Scouting. He was second among WHL goalies on the list, two spots behind Edmonton Oil Kings goaltender Laurent Brossoit. Liston led all WHL rookie goalies with 20 wins this season.
