Birthplace:

Montreal, Quebec

First media job:

Summer intern at the Globe and Mail, reporting news.

Career highlight:

Sharing a beer with Mike Weir in the clubhouse at Augusta National the night of his Masters win; covering the first NBA playoff game in Canadian history; being the only the Canadian to have covered Jordan’s game-winning shot against Utah in 1998, his retirement press conference later that year and the first game of his comeback with the Washington Wizards. Unlike Jordan, I quit while I was ahead. Won a national magazine award writing about sports radio in 2003 and co-authored best-selling LeafsAbomination in 2009, but it could have been written any year, really. The 2010 Olympics was a life highlight, not a career highlight. Being involved on the ground floor of Sportsnet Magazine looks like another.

Special interests/hobbies:

Will still display my ‘sparkling’ mid-range game in between injuries on the basketball court and have come to love soccer as long as it’s co-ed. A recovering golf addict and former triathlete, I enjoy Yoga (my wife’s idea) but have also built a backyard rink with my bare hands. Otherwise am engrossed in coaching my daughter's rep soccer team and being my son’s hockey chauffeur. Have been known to shout “Skate!” even though I barely can myself.

Bio: Turned to journalism after being a welfare worker in Toronto lost its luster. Was originally a news hound with designs on being a foreign correspondent, but the first full-time job I was offered at the Globe and Mail after years of contract work was in sports, so I jumped at it. The hours spent reading old issues of Sports Illustrated in the stacks at the library my Mom worked at when I was a kid have served me well. I spent the next 15 years covering basketball, golf, sports business and anything else I could come up with. I moved to Sportsnet in June of 2011 and feel like I’m home.
