Bio: Mike's bio in his own words: I was in my bedroom listening to Pink Floyd's Dark Side Of The Moon when my mom called me downstairs and pointed out an ad in the Burlington Gazette which was looking for a local sportswriter. Having played sports all my life, she thought it was a natural fit.

Larry Robertson, sports editor of the Gazette, agreed and hired me.

The simple truth is I love hockey and it has always been in my heart and soul. I knew I was going to work in the hockey industry one way or another. That is why I'm thankful that when I closed my calculus text book for the final time and headed home to Burlington, fully expecting to follow in my dad's footsteps and work at Stelco, my dad said: "Absolutely not!"

Don't get me wrong: Stelco provided my dad with a great living. He just wanted more for his son.

Thus I ventured down a path of watching and analyzing hockey that has now taken me to Rogers Sportsnet. For the record, I am not exactly a new employee. I was fortunate enough to do The Hockey News TV Show for five years and for the past four years I have contributed as an analyst. My new duties simply raise the bar in terms of what I hope to provide you as both a reader of sportsnet.ca, a viewer of Hockeycentral and a listener of Hockeycentral at Noon.

A few things you might like to know about me: Hockey is my life; music is my passion. I recently sold my record collection (about 5,000 LPs), but I treasure my 5,000-plus CDs, along with my growing collection of music DVDs. The Beatles are my absolute favorites and if you walked into my home office, you would feel as though you have walked into a Beatles museum. But don't write me off as mainstream. My other favorites include: Joe Ely, John Miles, Judie Tzuke and Little Feet.

I shamefully admit to being a bit of a TV addict. All In The Family is my all-time fave and I never miss an episode of Coronation Street. And much to my wife's chagrin, I rarely miss an episode of Everybody Loves Raymond.

I have been around long enough that you probably know I am opinionated when it comes to our game. Opinionated, but (I hope) not a jerk. I will offer my heart-felt thoughts, never meaning to offend, always hoping to inform. I covered the Peterborough Petes from 1978 to 1992 and spent the past 16 years as senior writer at The Hockey News.

Furthermore, I like goals, hate defensive hockey and think the NHL has done a nice job of keeping fighting in the game while eliminating brawling. I get to know the players and I bring what I know to you.

Let's have fun watching hockey together.
