This past Saturday Global Warriors FC 2 emanated from the Central Arena in Burlington, Ont. It was the promotion’s first event since their inaugural offering back in August 2011 and it featured a number of returning fighters on this card including Josh Hill, Taylor Solomon and Ryan Dickson.
Promoter Garnet Ace and the rest of his crew put on a first class event and the fights delivered in the same fashion. With four first-round finishes and just two bouts going the distance, there was plenty of action for the Ontario crowd. If you happened to miss the action, here’s a recap from Saturday night.
Josh Hill def. Josh Rettinghouse by submission (rear-naked choke) at 2:01 of Round 3
Hill had fans in attendance on their feet in the main event as he submitted WSOF rival Rettinghouse in the third round. It was Hill’s second career win by submission and this impressive outing could potentially earn him the next World Series of Fighting bantamweight title shot. Meanwhile for the 25-year-old Rettinghouse, he has lost two straight fights for the first time in his career.
Jason Witt def. Ryan Dickson by knockout (punch) at 1:00 of Round 1
Witt silenced the Canadian crowd with a stunning first-round KO of hometown favourite Dickson. “The Vanilla Gorilla” who trains out of Glory MMA in Missouri with UFC lightweight James Krause improved to 6-2 with the victory. It was also Witt’s first career win by knockout. For Dickson, he suffers back-to-back losses for the first time in his 15-fight career and it was also his first loss by way of knockout.
Alex Ricci def. Kyle Prepolec by unanimous decision (30-27, 30-27, 30-27)
Ricci dominated his younger adversary Prepolec using his height and reach advantage on route to a unanimous decision victory. The 32-year-old improved to 9-3 in his career, while Prepolec had his three-fight win streak snapped.
Mike Hernandez def. Lyndon Whitlock by TKO (strikes) at 4:42 of Round 1
Michigan Top Team product Hernandez came into enemy territory and took out Hamilton native Whitlock in the first round. Hernandez, who trains with UFC lightweight Daron Cruickshank, improved his record to 8-2 overall and it was also his sixth career win by knockout. For the 30-year-old Whitlock, he had his two-fight win streak snapped.
Adam Assenza def. Taylor Solomon by TKO (punches) at 3:35 of Round 1
In a last-minute replacement fight, Assenza overcame an early onslaught from his Canadian counterpoint to earn his fifth career victory. Initially Assenza was slated to fight John Shultz, while Soloman was scheduled to fight Jason Meisel (who had to bow out due to injury). What came together was a crowd-pleasing rematch and “The Maverick” earning his second career knockout win in the process. Solomon meanwhile has lost three of his last four fights.
