Jays lose the trade deadline WAR

Danny Valencia (Pat Sullivan/AP)

Debating a given player’s trade value can be a mug’s game—except in baseball, where the love affair with analytics has provided us with WAR, a one-number measure of any player’s worth. So, now that MLB’s trade deadline has come and gone, we judge how well the Jays did compared to their primary rivals in preparing for the race to the playoffs. The answer? Meh. While the Yankees and Orioles got pieces who statistically improve their ball clubs, the Jays acquired a statistical non-factor. Hardly inspiring stuff, but it could be worse—just ask the Royals.
