HAMILTON — It was a record-setting night for McMaster Marauders quarterback Asher Hastings.

The Regina native set a new Ontario University Athletics record on Thursday with four touchdown passes as his Marauders beat the visiting Waterloo Warriors 55-7 in CIS action.

Hastings has now thrown 25 TD passes this season to set the new OUA standard, which was previously 24 and held by a pair of Queen’s quarterbacks — Tommy Denison (2003) and Danny Brannagan (2008).

The third-year-year McMaster student has two games remaining this season to try and break the CIS record of 30 touchdown passes in a season, set by Saint Mary’s quarterback Chris Flynn in 1989.

Hastings, who finished 13 of 17 for 165 yards before taking a spot on the bench with a 35-0 lead at halftime, also surpassed the McMaster record for TD passes in a single season, topping former quarterback Marshall Ferguson, who threw 21 touchdowns in 2013.

Quarterbacks Anthony Bontorin and Dylan Astrom split duties in place of Hastings in the second half and each threw a touchdown for the Mauraders (5-1) and Jordan Lyons ran back a punt 75 yards for another TD.

Jonathan Biggs was just 7 of 15 for 78 yards and an interception for the Warriors (0-6).
