Huskies top Rams for women’s basketball title

Lisa Thomaidis led the national team to two gold medals in the summer, and now has gotten the Huskies their first championship victory.

FREDERICTON – Laura Dally has 25 points and six rebounds as the Saskatchewan Huskies beat the Ryerson Rams 85-71 to win the Canadian Interuniversity Sport women’s basketball title.

Sabine Dukate had 22 points, seven rebounds, seven assists and three steals for the Huskies, while Kelsey Trulsrud and Dalyce Emmerson added 14 points each.

Dukate (4-for-7) and Dally (4-for-9) were both dangerous from three-point range.

Keneca Pingue-Giles, the CIS women’s basketball player of the year, had 26 points and six rebounds for the Huskies but went 1-for-9 on her three-point attempts.

It’s the first ever CIS women’s basketball title for Saskatchewan.

In the bronze-medal match, Rachelle Coward scored 18 points as the Saint Mary’s Huskies beat the McGill Martlets 56-43.
