EDMONTON — Brock University’s Jade Parsons won her fourth straight gold medal Sunday at the CIS wrestling championships.
Parsons won the 48-kilogram weight class as the Badger women tied a CIS record of four straight banners, previously set by Simon Fraser. Brock finished the two-day event with a combined 14 medals, including six gold between the men’s and women’s teams.
Four of Brock’s gold medals were won on the women’s side by Parsons, Carlene Sluberski (55 kg), Indira Moores (59 kg) and Jessica Brouillette (63 kg). Nick Row (65 kg) and Andrii Vorontsov (100 kg) won the other two medals on the men’s side. The Badger men extended their own national record by claiming their 15th CIS banner
"We didn’t come here focused on winning the team titles, or setting CIS records or any of that," said Brock head coach Marty Calder. "We came here to perform as well as we could in our individual matches, and we knew if we did that we would have success as a team."
Concordia’s Veronica Keefe successfully defended her 72-kg gold medal with an injury win over Guelph’s Gracelynn Doogan, while Calgary’s Holly Ellsworth-Clark supplanted Gryphon Kelsey Gsell at the top of the 82-kg weight class.
Alberta’s Hayley Thomas claimed gold in the women’s 51-kg weight class by defeating Brock rookie Emily Schaefer 8-0.
Michael Asselstine of the Alberta Golden Bears beat McMaster’s Jason Buckle 12-2 in the gold medal 61-kg weight class bout.
New Brunswick’s Ilya Abelev wrestler grappled his way to his fourth straight CIS gold medal in his fourth different weight class. He won gold in the 76-kg class by beating Aleksander Soronov of the Winnipeg Wesmen, adding to his previous CIS gold in the 72-kg (2013), 68-kg (2012) and 65-kg (2011) weight classes.
Western’s Steven Takahashi triumphing over Saskatchewan’s Dylan Bray in the 57-kg class while Saskatchewan’s Josh Bodnarchuk struck national championship gold in the 54-kg bout with a victory over Concordia’s Trevor Banks.
