WINDSOR, Ont. – The York Lions lead the men’s and women’s competitions following the first day of the CIS track and field championships Thursday.
York leads the men’s competition with 16 points, one more than the University of Toronto and two ahead of Windsor. The Lions top the women’s standings with 21 points, with Toronto and Saskatchewan tied for second with 19 points each.
Third-year sprinter Khamica Bingham of Brampton, Ont., led the way for York with a record-breaking performance in the women’s 60-metre event. She won the race with in 7.19 seconds.
York’s Bismark Boateng, a Toronto native, won the men’s event with a time of 6.76 seconds. Regina’s Tevaughn Campbell was second in 6.80 seconds while York’s Ike Omoruna was third in 6.87.
York’s Brittany Crew, who earlier Thursday was named the top CIS female field performer, claimed the gold medal in the women’s weight throw with an effort of 18.45 metres. Saskatchewan’s Olena Olenick was second at 17.45 metres while Guelph’s Sarah Dougherty was third at 17.14.
U of T’s James Turner won the men’s pentathlon with 4,077 points while Calgary’s Niki Oudenaarden claimed the women’s competition with 4,072.
