West Indies captain Darren Sammy scored 41 to lead his regional side Windward Islands to an upset victory over defending champions Trinidad and Tobago on the opening day of the Caribbean Twenty20 championship.

Sammy struck two fours and two sixes in his unbeaten stand Monday that spurred the Windwards to 129-4 off 20 overs.

The 28-year-old then returned to take 1-15 from three overs of medium pace as Trinidad and Tobago fell 11 runs short at 118-9.

Spinners Shane Shillingford (3-21) and Garey Mathurin (2-11) also stifled the Trinidadians. Shillingford took the key wickets of internationals Lendl Simmons (32) and Kieron Pollard (6).

West Indies all-rounder Dwayne Bravo had 51 off 42 balls with four sixes for Trinidad and Tobago.

In the day's second Zone A match, Guyana overcame host Leeward Islands by five wickets.

Guyana, whose participation in the tournament had been in doubt up to last week due to problems at home in which in the government took the unusual step in disbanding the local cricket board, secured the win with four balls to spare.

The Leeward Islands compiled 134-6 off 20 overs through Justin Athanaze's late hitting which earned him an unbeaten 30 off 15 balls. He hit three sixes.

Veteran West Indies left-hander Shivnarine Chanderpaul energized the Guyana run chase with four sixes in 30 off 17 balls.

Left-hander Leon Johnson then steered his side home with an unbeaten 37 off 32 balls, hitting the winning six off pacer Gavin Tonge.

Ten teams are participating in the tournament with the seven Caribbean sides joined by Canada, the Netherlands and English county side Sussex.

Sussex takes on the Netherlands in Tuesday's first match while Jamaica and the Combined Campuses and Colleges meet in the late game.
