YORKTON, Sask. — Chelsea Carey advanced to the Canadian Open quarterfinals after scoring three in the eighth to pull out a 9-7 win over former teammate Kristy McDonald in B qualifier action Friday.
Carey scored a deuce in four to take a 3-2 lead but McDonald kept pace and matched with two in five. McDonald missed her final shot and Carey capitalized to score three in the sixth to regain the lead 6-4 and McDonald bounced back with a three-ender of her own in seven.

Edmonton’s Heather Nedohin prevailed over Switzerland’s Binia Feltscher 5-3 to reach the quarterfinals in the other B qualifier game.
Winnipeg’s Jill Thurston scored a deuce in the fourth, stole one in five and two in six during a 9-6 victory to eliminate Regina’s Amber Holland in a C bracket match.
In the men’s division, Saskatoon’s Steve Laycock is through to the quarterfinals after scoring two in the fifth and stealing a pair in six to pull out a 6-4 victory over Toronto’s John Epping in the B qualifier game. Epping drops to the C side.
Winnipeg’s Reid Carruthers edged Sweden’s Niklas Edin 8-7 with a single in the extra end of their C event match. Carruthers scored three in the seventh and Edin tied it with two in eight.
