Cotter qualifies for playoffs at BC playdowns

Jim Cotter has advanced to the playoffs of the BC CDI Men’s Championship after defeating Michael Johnson 5-4 Thursday night in Nelson.

Cotter, a five-time provincial champion from Vernon, will hold the top seed as the A qualifier.

Johnson drops to the B-side semifinals of the triple knockout preliminary round where he faces Sean Geall, who beat Tom Buchy 10-3.

The other B semifinal sees Jeff Richard take on Glen Jackson.

Richard earned a 6-3 win over Wes Craig while Jackson topped Daniel Wenzek 6-4.

The BC CDI Men’s Championship resumes Friday at 9 a.m. PT.

NORTHERN ONTARIO

Brad Jacobs, Mike Assad, Jordan Chandler and Colin Koivula are locked in a four-way tie atop of the leaderboard with 3-1 records at the Northern Ontario Travelers Championship in North Bay.

Jacobs, the 2014 Olympic gold medallist, lost 8-5 to Dylan Johnston in the afternoon draw and bounced back to beat Robbie Gordon 6-3 during the evening.

Koivula won both his games to tie the group defeating Gordon and Johnston by identical 7-6 scores.

Tanner Horgan, the region’s reigning junior men’s champion, won both of his games Thursday to improve to a 2-2 record. Horgan edged Assad 7-6 with a deuce in the final end and beat Chandler 7-2.

Earlier Thursday, Chandler won 6-2 over Patrick Gelinas. Assad also scored a victory over Gelinas 8-7.

The round robin of the Northern Ontario Travelers Championship resumes Friday at noon ET.


MANITOBA

Mike McEwen and Reid Carruthers scored big wins Thursday at the Manitoba Viterra Championship in Selkirk.

McEwen earned an 11-4 victory over Terry McNamee while Carruthers, the defending champion, topped Randy Neufeld 9-2. Both teams have now reached the A-qualifiers. Carruthers clashes with Scott Ramsay, who beat Jared Kolomaya 6-5, while McEwen meets Dennis Bohn, who defeated David Bohn 9-2.

Meanwhile, recent Canadian junior winner Matt Dunstone picked up a 7-2 win over Tyler Drews and now faces William Lyburn, who beat Kyle Foster 9-4.

Alex Forrest topped Steve Irwin 9-3 to set up a match versus Daley Peters, who defeated Trevor Loreth 8-3.

Four additional teams will advance from the B-side.

The Manitoba Viterra Championship resumes Friday at 8:30 a.m. CT.


ALBERTA

Calgary’s Charley Thomas has advanced to the Alberta Boston Pizza Cup playoffs following a 7-1 rout over Edmonton’s Mick Lizmore in the A qualifier Thursday in Camrose.

Meanwhile, defending champion Kevin Koe of Calgary defeated Kevin Park of Lethbridge 7-1 to reach the B-side semifinals. Koe will play Edmonton’s Brendan Bottcher, who thumped Greg Pasichnuk of Manning 12-2.

The other B semi sees Lizmore take on St. Albert’s Glen Hansen, who beat Jeff Erickson of Sedgewick 9-5.

Earlier Thursday, Koe fell 6-4 to Lizmore and Bottcher lost 8-7 to Thomas, both in extra ends, to drop to the B side of the triple knockout.

The Alberta Boston Pizza Cup resumes Friday at 9 a.m. MT.
