SELKIRK, Man. — Winnipeg’s Jennifer Jones improved to a 2-1 record at the Masters Grand Slam of Curling with a 7-3 win in seven ends over Edmonton’s Val Sweeting during Draw 8 Thursday.
Jones broke open the game with a three-ender in the second and led 5-1 through five ends thanks to a single in the fourth and a steal of one in the fifth.
Sweeting closed the gap with a deuce in the sixth but Jones charged right back scoring two of her own in the seventh.
Team Sweeting also now sports a 2-1 record.
Elsewhere, reigning world champions Team Binia Feltscher (3-0) remains the lone undefeated women’s rink after scoring two in the final end for a 6-5 win over Winnipeg’s Team Kristy McDonald (1-2).
Switzerland’s Alina Paetz (1-2) stole two in the fourth and swiped singles in the following three ends during an 8-3 win over Edmonton’s Chelsea Carey (1-1).
Switzerland’s Silvana Tirinzoni (2-1) rallied from a four-point deficit to defeat Rachel Homan 8-5. Tirinzoni scored a single in the fifth and added steals in back-to-back ends with two in the sixth and four in the seventh. Homan, the two-time defending Masters champion, is now 2-1 in the tournament.
In the men’s division, Toronto’s John Epping scored three in the sixth end during a 5-4 victory over Norway’s Thomas Ulsrud (0-3).
