Jones stays golden to win Manitoba Scotties

Jennifer Jones has won the Manitoba Scotties Tournament of Hearts a record seven times as a skip (Anil Mungal).

Reigning Olympic champion Jennifer Jones ran Kerri Einarson out of rocks in the 10th end and captured her seventh career Manitoba Scotties Tournament of Hearts title with a 5-2 win Sunday in Winkler, Man.

The Winnipeg team of Jones, third Kaitlyn Lawes, second Jill Officer and lead Dawn McEwen stayed golden throughout the tournament finishing on top of the Asham Group in the round-robin stage with an undefeated 7-0 record and beating Einarson 9-6 Saturday night in the page playoff 1-vs-1 game.

Einarson, who went 7-0 in the Extreme Force Group, held off Barb Spencer 5-3 in the semifinal earlier in the day to set up the rematch.

Jones opened with the hammer and already held shot stone before throwing her final rock and looked to score two. However, her rock had a little too much heat on it, rolled an inch too far and she had to take just the one point. Einarson blanked the second and third ends and finally settled for one in the fourth to tie it 1-1.

The two rinks continued to keep pace and traded single points in the fifth and sixth ends to knot the game 2-2.

Jones blanked the seventh and bumped Einarson’s stone off of the button to count two in the eighth to pull ahead. Einarson couldn’t get her final rock in the ninth through the port and ran into Jones’s stone that settled for shot and the single steal.

Einarson held the hammer coming home but the three-point deficit proved to be too much.
