Lawton downs Nedohin at GSOC Players’

Saskatoon’s Stefanie Lawton defeated Edmonton’s Heather Nedohin 5-1 in seven ends to start Wednesday’s action at the Players’ Championship in Summerside, P.E.I.

Lawton broke a 1-1 tie with a single in the third and pulled away with steals of one in the fifth and two in the sixth. Nedohin, a two-time Scotties champion, couldn’t rally back and the two rinks shook hands early.

In other Draw 2 action, Scotties finalist Valerie Sweeting scored three in eighth to lift her Edmonton rink to an 8-7 win over Sherry Middaugh, from Coldwater, Ont.

Sweeting, from Edmonton, led 4-2 after the fourth but Middaugh pulled ahead with a three-ender of her own in the fifth.

Olympic silver medallist Margaretha Sigfridsson was victorious 6-3 over Julie Hastings, from Thornhill, Ont. Sigfridsson, from Sweden, broke a 3-3 tie with a deuce in the seventh and sealed the victory with a steal of one in the eighth.

Calgary’s Crystal Webster topped Michele Jaggi from Switzerland with a three-ender in the extra end to win 7-4.
