Martin improves to 3-0 at GSOC Canadian Open

Edmonton’s Kevin Martin scored four in the seventh end during an 8-6 victory over Saskatoon’s Steve Laycock in Draw 5 action at the Canadian Open Thursday night in Medicine Hat, Alta.

Martin trailed by one but grabbed the four-ender and improved to a 3-0 record in the round-robin of the Grand Slam of Curling event.

Elsewhere, Jeff Stoughton (3-0) scored three-enders in the first and seventh ends during an 8-4 win over William Lyburn (0-3) in an all-Winnipeg rink matchup.

Calgary’s Kevin Koe (3-0) nailed the single in the extra end to edge Winnipeg’s Mike McEwen 6-5. McEwen held the hammer in the final end but couldn’t get the deuce to win it and his rink dropped to a 1-2 record.

Switzerland’s Peter de Cruz (2-1) scored two in the seventh and stole one in the final end for an 8-5 victory over Brad Gushue, from St. John’s, N.L. Gushue is now 1-2 in the round-robin.

Rob Fowler, from Brandon, Man., earned a steal of one in the sixth and two in the seventh during a 5-3 win against Edmonton’s Brendan Bottcher (0-3). It was Fowler’s first victory of the tournament and his team now holds with a 1-1 record.
