Middaugh tops Flaxey in extra at Ont. Scotties

Sherry Middaugh has won the Ontario Scotties five times in her career (Anil Mungal).

Sherry Middaugh hit and stuck to score the winner in the extra end to beat defending champ Allison Flaxey 6-5 during Draw 7 action at the Ontario Scotties Tournament of Hearts Thursday night.

Middaugh and her Coldwater rink sit second in the round robin standings with a 6-1 record heading into the final day of round robin action while Flaxey of Listowel is 4-3 and tied for third.

Flaxey faced four in the fourth end but drew to the button to count one and followed that by stealing a point in the sixth to go up 3-1. Middaugh rallied with a deuce in seven to tie it and swiped singles in eight and nine to lead 5-3. Flaxey’s score of two in the 10th sent it into the extra frame where Middaugh prevailed.

Elsewhere in Penetanguishene, Ont., Julie Hastings of Bayview-Thornhill qualified for the playoffs after defeating Ottawa’s Danielle Inglis 6-4. Hastings opened with single steals in the first three ends and Inglis drew to the button to get on the board with a point in four. Hastings countered with one in the fifth to make it 4-1.

Hastings missed a runback attempt in six and Inglis capitalized to score a deuce and narrow the score 4-3. Hastings made a hit and stick to score one in the seventh and take a two-point lead. The two rinks traded singles through eight and nine and Hastings ran Inglis out of rocks in the 10th.

Team Hastings now holds an unblemished 7-0 record while Team Inglis dropped to 2-5.

Shannon Kee of Waterloo (3-4) is hanging in there after drawing to the lid to score the winning point in the extra end for a thrilling 6-5 victory over Brantford’s Jacqueline Harrison (4-3).

Mississauga’s Clancy Grandy (3-4) stayed in contention with an 8-1 rout in five ends against Ottawa’s Rhonda Varnes (2-5). Grandy scored a deuce in the first, added another two in the third and stole pairs of points in the fourth and fifth.

Waterloo’s Caitlin Romain (3-4) upset Middaugh in the afternoon draw and followed up earning a 7-2 win in eight ends over Megan Balsdon of Mississauga (1-6) to remain in the mix as well. Romain broke a 2-2 tie scoring four in the six and stole one in the eighth to close out the game.
