MADRID, Spain — Alberto Contador says he will compete in the Spanish Vuelta after recovering from a fall that forced him to withdraw from the Tour de France.

The Spanish five-time grand tour winner fractured his right shin in a crash during the 10th stage of the Tour on July 15.

He had originally said it would be very difficult for him to recover in time for the three-week Vuelta, which starts on Aug. 23.

Contador says he has been training for 10 days and has no pain in his leg.

Even so, he says he won’t be a contender for the overall victory but that "maybe in the last week I can fight for a stage win."
