Can the Flames make the playoffs?
BY DEREK CARSON - FAN FUEL BLOGGER
The second half of the 2011-2012 NHL regular season is underway and as we head toward the All-Star break, our teams have some soul searching to do.
In a seven-part series, I will present the burning question that will be keeping the players and fans of their favourite Canadian team up at night. Today I look at the Calgary Flames and wonder if they can make the playoffs.

The Flames are just a few points out of a playoff spot and are looking like they want to make a push this year. Jarome Iginla has one more year on his contract after this season. While some fans think the Flames need to start a rebuild now, that's not going to happen so long as Iginla is leading the club.
The Flames recently acquired Mike Cammalleri from the Montreal Canadiens for Rene Bourque and a second round pick. The move gives the Flames an immediate offensive upgrade and also sends a message to the team that the goal is to win now. The only question is whether they can actually do it.
Right now, the Flames' defence doesn't contribute enough on the score sheet. Today's NHL is faster and higher scoring. Stay at home defencemen are becoming a thing of the past and Jay Bouwmeester can't be the only defencemen who contributes. For the Flames to have a legit shot at the playoffs and make up the ground they need, another move should be made.
If it was up to you, what deal would you make as the Flames general manager?
