Don't plan on Canucks trading Schneider

Will Canucks goaltender Cory Schneider be on the move at the 2012 NHL trade deadline day? Sure he might be. If the absolute perfect deal comes along for the Canucks, it is certainly possible.

But the emphasis is on the perfect deal, so don't expect it to happen. Because if they trade Schneider and then something happens to Roberto Luongo, then the chances for a Stanley Cup are zero.

Many would have you believe he might be on his way to Columbus as part of a deal for Rick Nash or Jeff Carter and others are suggesting he could be on his way to Tampa as part of a deal for Victor Hedman or Ryan Malone.

Have your say: Do you have a great idea for a blog and want to write for Fan Fuel? Email us here. | What is the Canucks biggest trade need?

Obviously the only guy that REALLY knows what's up with Cory Schneider is Vancouver GM Mike Gillis and while Gillis is likely listening to all sorts of offers he is not about to share that information with members of the media. As Canuck fans already know, getting a read on what Mike Gillis is up to is about as difficult as reading the extended version of "War and Peace."

If Schneider does end up getting moved, we will hear about it AFTER it happens.

That said, I don't believe we will hear that news any time soon.

In this blogger's opinion, Cory Schneider is an asset the Canucks want playing here and now. Even if it's just in a backup role to Roberto Luongo.

Yes, it's very true that the Canucks have a window of opportunity right now with players like the Sedins, Burrows, Kesler, Edler and Bieksa. These guys and others are in their prime or approaching it, and yes, it would be nice to have that one last piece to complete the set and an "asset" like Schneider could certainly fetch you that missing piece.

But here's the thing.

What happens to the Canucks Stanley Cup chances if Cory Schneider is moved out and then Luongo gets injured between the trade deadline and the playoffs (or during the playoffs)?

What happens if Luongo has one of his "moments" (or two, or three) during this year's playoff run?

If Schneider is moved out, is Canuck prospect Eddie Lack the Canucks backup plan?

In this blogger's opinion, the Canucks are not willing to take these gambles.

In all likelihood, barring injury, I believe the Canucks still go with Luongo heading into the playoffs but I also have to believe they are very happy having a deluxe insurance policy in Cory Schneider.

That is just one of the reasons I believe he will still be a Canuck after the February 27th deadline comes and goes.

As far as the future is concerned, I only know this much. The Canucks reached Game 7 of the Final last year and if they can't get any further with Luongo this year, then the goalie being moved in the offseason might not be a redhead from the Boston area.
