As of today, the numbers say that Jonas Gustavsson is Toronto’s best shot at achieving a playoff spot.

The numbers also say that he will walk at the end of this season for nothing unless he is re-signed, as he becomes an unrestricted free agent on July 1st. If you are Toronto, with doubts as to both the health and long term ability of James Reimer, do you look to trade Gustavsson or sign him to an extension?

Reimer has two more years left on his deal with a very reasonable cap hit of $1.8 million.

Before you make that call, understand that the list of pending UFA goalies is fairly long and includes names like Huet, Brodeur, Niittymaki, Vokoun and even the potential of Ryan Miller on the trade front.

Knowing all of that, what is Toronto’s best option?

Deal the Monster now to teams that need depth at goaltending for a deep playoff run?

Re-sign him and go forward with Reimer and Gustavsson as your tandem into the future? Gustavsson would be looking for at least a $2 million per year.

Personally, I’d choose a third option. You likely aren’t going to acquire a quality goaltender at the deadline, unless you can pry Schneider out of Vancouver. So, ride him through the season and take your chances at free agency. Accept that you might lose him for nothing but he gives you the best chance to make it now.

I could be way off base though so what would you do? If you trade him, what’s he worth?
