Several players with the Calgary Stampeders and one member of the team’s coaching staff are being investigated by the Canadian Football League for their alleged participation in a confrontation with an official following the team’s 37-34 loss to the Saskatchewan Roughriders on Friday at Mosaic Stadium, Sportsnet.ca has learned.
Depending on the results of the investigation, disciplinary action in the form of financial penalties may be forthcoming.
Tom Higgins, the CFL’s Director of Officiating, said an official announcement will come on Tuesday morning.
The game included a failed attempt by Calgary at on onside kick late in the contest. The Stamps believed one of their players had been the last one to touch the ball, which would have given them possession.
There had been some debate as to whether the player touched it while out of bounds or if he caught it in bounds and landed out of bounds. Following a video replay by the officials in the upstairs booth it was ruled no player had touched the ball. The Roughriders were given the ball and ran out the time.
En route to the Stamps’ dressing room, which is across from the officials room, a confrontation occurred involving players, a coach and referee Bud Steen.
"With good reason, one of the (officials) almost looked like he was afraid for his physical well being," said an eyewitness, who added the Stamps players were completely out of control, "backing the referee into a corner, shoving people all over the place and screaming curse words at him."
According to one source, the conduct of the Stamps’ coach may be more of an issue than what the players did.
The two teams play one another in Calgary on Thanksgiving Day.
This is the second incident this year involving the Stamps and an official in a game against the Roughriders.
In a game in August at McMahon Stadium, Calgary middle linebacker JoJuan Armour was ejected on his team’s first series for a pushing an umpire and faced an immediate one-game suspension. Armour maintained he had been pushed into the official from behind by a Saskatchewan player. A day later following a further review of the game, the league ruled that Armour had indeed been pushed into the official. The official who made the call was disciplined for the mistake and the league admitted an error had been made.
