(Update as of Friday, Oct. 31 @ 1:45 p.m. ET: Don Matthews resigns as coach of the Toronto Argonauts.)
Take the Exorcist, The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, and Friday the 13th part 4. Add them all up and multiply them by 10 and they still would not have been as scary as the Argos fourth quarter debacle at Rogers Centre Thursday night.
In one of the most bizarre 15 minutes the Argos have played in recent memory, they allowed the Roughriders to score a blood curdling 28 points in the fourth quarter to hand them their ninth straight loss.
Make it a perfect 0-8 for Don Matthews.
After last night's inexplicable fake punt late in the fourth quarter, I joined the rest of the reporters in the media room to interview The Don. Looking glass eyed and slightly confused, The Don defended attempting a fake punt on his own 40 yard line with under two minutes to play in a tie game.
At that point all I could think about was "The Dawn of the Living Dead". As in, was this a Zombie I was speaking to or a head coach of a pro football team?
To go from six straight appearances in the East Final to a nine-game losing streak and a 4-14 season is akin to the scene in the "Silence of the Lambs" when Hannibal Lector peels off the skin of some other dude from his own face in the back of that ambulance.
This is where Argos co-owners Howard Sokolowski and David Cynamon have to sit down with CEO Michael Clemons and take a long, hard look at every aspect of the entire Argos organization.
Goodbye Don Matthews. Time to go back to Oregon and enjoy your golden years. The Argos and the CFL can't afford to have you stick around any longer.
