TW LW Team Our Take
1 The Als looked better in Week 2 than they did in Week 1. That makes two straight wins over teams from the West. The Als simply put the boots to the Eskies in the fourth quarter. The Als are 2-0 and they haven't even played anyone from the East yet, while Anthony Calvillo sure doesn't look like a quarteback in the twilight of his career.
2 The CFL is a bottom line business. The bottom line is that Darian Durant is now a perfect 6-0 as a starter in his CFL career. He's the kind of quarterback that will give coach Ken Miller some sleepless nights. But the man does find a way to win. Steve Baggs had another epic game on the Riders defensive line.
7 I am thinking Mike Kelly just earned himself a boatload of respect in the Bombers locker room and with Bombers fans all over Manitoba. I loved Ed Tait's story for the Winnipeg Free Press about the Bomber fan who dropped off beer at Kelly's house to congratulate him on the win over the Stamps. Now that's what I call motivation.
8 Bob O'Billovich is about as fine a football man as you will ever meet in the CFL. So he's far to classy to gloat. But Obie had to be loving every second of the Ticats win over the Lions at BC Place. Quinton Porter played a solid game and Geoff Tisdale come up with a game breaking 43-yard interception return for a touchdown.
4 As bad as the Argos were in the second quarter against the Riders, the Eskimos were arguably a lot worse in the fourth quarter against the Als. What in the name of Dan Kepley happened to the Eskies at Molson Stadium? How do you allow 31 points on one quarter? Richie Hall looked he was going to throw up.
5 Has John Hufnagel ever been more upset than he was on the sidelines during the Stamps' loss to the Bombers? I highly doubt it. What in world has happened to Henry Burris? His QB rating is a dismal 60.8. Up next, the Stamps are home to the Argos. I have a hunch the Stamps will be extra motivated after practice this week.
3 Well, as far as second quarters go, that was about as bad as it could get. Bart Andrus was still visibly upset about the lack of team discipline in his postgame comments. The Argos took an unacceptable 14 penalties for a total of 131 yards in the first half. Special teams blunders. Bad ball handling. Dropped interceptions. Plenty of blame to go around.
6 Losing to the Riders to start the season was bad. Losing to the Ticats in your own barn is way worse. Through two games the Lions have allowed 10 sacks, they've fumbled the ball six times and have thrown four interceptions. That is not the kind of football we're used to seeing from Wally Buono.
