There's no bye week for humiliation as Perry Lefko lays his rep on the line for another week of CFL picks.
There is no rest for the weary.
Unlike some teams in the Canadian Football League, I do not have the luxury of a bye week.
No, Perry's Peerless Predictions, number one with a bullet among public handicappers of CFL games, didn't have a chance to go to some resort or back home to Mississippi or, in my case Mississauga, for some of grandma's good eats.
I had to suck it up, tape up the injury I received last week - hurt feelings after picking Winnipeg and face a multitude of snickering and verbal jabbing - which forever besmirched my reputation.
Then again, I picked the Roughriders to win and I was running back to Saskatoon to revel with my fellow Watermelon Heads. Yes, for one week, I was admired by those in the province of Saskatchewan - and you know who you are - who have been demanding my head and other parts of my anatomy, which I shall not mention, on a platter.
People, people, chill.
Alas, I digress.
So, in the pursuit of life and liberty, we commence the touting, or as Randall the Handle tells me, educated and advanced theories on wagering with acumen. Randall, by the way, went to some fancy finishing school. And, if you're looking for some more football talk, tune in Saturday mornings from 8 to 10 on Hamilton's TALK 820 (on the AM dial). Yours truly provides his expertise.
Friday
Saskatchewan (4-3) at Montreal (6-1): Okay, the Roughriders are up by more than three touchdowns after a half in last week's game against Hamilton, which failed to register a single first down. But by the game's end, the Roughriders managed to pull through after a spectacular comeback by the Bob Young's Boys. What I like about the Roughies is the play of the offence, in particular quarterback Darian (Duran) Durant. He is really gaining confidence with each outing. Jason Clermont had a breakthrough game and the offence as a whole is making serious yards on the ground and in the air. Weston (Best) Dressler is a playa. What I find disturbing is the defence is starting to show signs of coming apart. Some of that is due to injuries, but it could be that worked so well at the start of the season isn't nearly as complicated anymore. Yes, Stevie (Wonder) Baggs has developed as the star defensive player to this point of the season, and raise your hand if you knew this well-travelled, pigeon-toed, dreadlock guy would be the monster that he is? And John (Le Freak C'est) Chick is proving again that he is among the best rush ends in the league? But there are problems elsewhere. Now consider the Als are a dominant offence in every possible area. If the Als' offensive line can neutralize the Roughriders' d-line, the game is decided in the trenches. And I believe it will be. I think the Als' defence will be too much for the Roughriders' o-line to handle. And the Als' defence can man up against any team. The Als rarely lose at home. Als humbled the Roughriders 43-13 in Regina. I don't think the outcome will be nearly as decisive in Montreal. But I do think that announcer who says, "Touchdown, Moanreeal" will have ample opportunities to annunciate that.
And the winner is: Moanreeal (guess that gets me back in the Regina doghouse. C'est la vie).
Winnipeg (2-5) at B.C. (3-4): The Bombers have fixed all their problems on offence by giving a guy named Manny some added duties to take the load off Mike Kelly. Does that mean the Bombers are manning up? Will that mean the Bombers receivers will catch Michael Bishop's fastballs? Does that mean my man Bish (I'm a member of his fan club) will not throw picks? Unless Kelly wises up and starts going shotgun more often and the ground game is featured with more commitment, it won't matter. The sad part is the defence is getting worn down. If the Bombers can rattle Jarious (Don't Call Me Alfred) Jackson or knock him out of the game, they have a chance. The Lions are on a two-game win streak and Action Jackson showed what he can do when he is on a roll. He's the best vertical thrower in the league. And he has a great rapport with his brother Paris. I'm waiting for Geroy Simon to have a boffo game and this might be it. He really does his best catching under the Big Top. The defence, in particular end Brent (But Ya Doesn't Have To Call Me) Johnson is making his presence felt again. The Lions are sleeping and this appears to be the game where Wallyworld will tie The Don for most career victories by a coach.
And the winner is: B.C.
LAST WEEK'S RECORD: 3-1.
OVERALL RECORD: 18-10
RECORD PICKING THE ROUGHRIDERS: Priceless and peerless.
