With school just around the corner, the orator of CFL odds, Perry Lefko got a tutorial from from Randle the Handle before coming up with this week's CFL picks.
Yo, Winnipeg, what up?
I pick you to beat Montreal in an upset and you get blown up real big. I pick B.C. to beat you and wallop them.
I guess I had the right idea, but the wrong time - and maybe the wrong teams. Montreal hardly loses, while B.C. is hardly winning.
Coach Lefko harped on the ground game and using the shotgun more often. Coach Kelly finally listened to me.
That said, I felt like spit watching the Bombers literally run all over the Lions. What is an esteemed public handicapper to do?
Well, this week there are two games that on paper appear to be easy pickings. I took a tutorial with my eminent financial advisor Randle the Handle, who offered me some suggestions going forward with my selections. Hey, I'm picking 66% winners and some of them haven't been the obvious ones, but a little brushup moving toward the halfway point of the season is fine. Hey, it's back to school time anyway.
Yes, even the mastermind of Perry's Peerless Prognostications could use a little help now and then - including when and when not to pick Winnipeg to win.
Alas, we live and learn about Mad Mike Kelly every week.
Friday
Calgary (3-4) at Toronto (2-5): The Stamps are really not as bad as their record indicates. As I said in a column this week, they could be 4-3 or 5-2 with a little luck. That said, they have made significant changes in their defence because of injuries and performance. Two changes were on the line, one at middle linebacker. I guess co-ordinator Chris Jones, who likes an attacking defence, wants to get more push at the point of attack. So, we expect the Stamps to go hard and heavy with various blitzes, while also trying to get physical with their corners. Look, if Henry Burris continues to do his thing, the offence will be fine. We repeatedly say it is important getting the ball in the hands of Joffrey (All World) Reynolds. It will be interesting to see if the Stamps break down the Argo defence just as they did in game three of the season and B.C. did two weeks ago. Calgary is quite familiar with Argo pivot Cody Pickett, even though this is a different offence from last year. Argo head coach Bart Andrus continues to talk about how he wants to go vertical. Well, we say look at running the ball. It worked well on the rare occasions in which rushing was emphasized. Pickett did well against B.C., but can he repeat that or will the game tape provide Calgary with the means to stop him? Argos receiving corps gets a new look again. That said, we're just not sold on this team and Andrus right now. His team finds different ways to lose. Randle has the Stamps by seven and the over under is 54½.
And the winner is: Calgary (like you needed me to tell you that. I think they'll cover as well).
Saturday
Hamilton (4-3) at Edmonton (4-3): Who will start at quarterback for the Cats? Quinton Porter has started the first seven, but has a wonky knee. Kevin Glenn has played well in relief and deserves the chance to start. Coach Marcel (Morceau) Bellefeuille isn't revealing anything (get the Morceau reference)? We think it's a no-brainer to start Glenn, but applaud Bellefeuille for making the opposition prepare for both. If you've got a running back such as DeAndre (Corn On The) Cobb, this doesn't have to be exclusively about the pivot. But we also think the receiving corps is getting it together with the addition of Arland Bruce (Le Trois). But, please, get the ball some more to Prechae (Don't Call Me Chi Chi) Rodriguez. Drisan (Not To Be Confused With Dristan) James takes over one of the slots from Chris Davis, apparently because of inconsistency. The Cats beat Edmonton in Steeltown, but largely because the Eskimos made turnovers and other mental blunders. The Eskimos can claim sole possession of first place in the West with a win. Remember how they struggled to start the season? Everything is going right for them. While Calvin McCarty is sidelined with a hammy, Arkee (Fire) Whitlock has really taken a hold of the starter's job since his awful debut. I like the way Ricky Ray is battling through some adversity. He really showed his brilliance last time out with that incredible touchdown drive at the end. But Edmonton's greatest weapon now is Tristan (Action) Jackson and his ability to create field position. He is the best returner in the league and this is what you need to succeed. Hello, Toronto. Randal has Edmonton by 8 and the over-under at 53½.
And the winner is: Edmonton.
LAST WEEK'S RECORD: 1-1.
OVERALL RECORD: 19-11
RECORD PICKING THE BOMBERS: Don't ask.
