The Toronto Argonauts desire to play next season at BMO Field got a boost from commissioner Mark Cohon on Saturday, who announced that the league will work with the club to investigate if a move can be facilitated.
"At its meeting earlier (Saturday), the Canadian Football League Board of Governors instructed the league office to work with the Toronto Argonauts to provide a detailed report on the feasibility of the city of Toronto's BMO Field for CFL football," Cohon said in a statement. "The Board was assured this work will be undertaken as quickly as possible."
The Argos signed a 15-year lease agreement with the Rogers Centre in 2005, but it consists of three five-year contracts that include two five-year options. The first five-year segment concluded after this past season. There would be political hurdles that would need to be addressed first, both at the city council and Canadian Football League board, if the Argos were to move to BMO and play on a reconfigured football field.
Toronto FC of Major League Soccer is the only tenant at BMO Field, and its fans are vehemently against playing Canadian football on the new yet-to-be installed grass surface.
BMO Field hold 20,000-plus for soccer games, but has plans to expand its capacity by at least 5,000 in the future.
