Bombers sign rookie QB
July 20, 2010

WINNIPEG -- Quarterback Joey Elliott signed with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers on Tuesday.
The six-foot-two, 216-pound Elliott joins the Bombers after being released by the NFL's Philadelphia Eagles last month.
Elliott played collegiately at Purdue, passing for 3,026 yards and 22 TDs in his senior season. Despite that, he wasn't selected in the 2010 NFL draft before signing as a free agent with the Eagles.
"We feel Joey is an athletic quarterback who is suited for the Canadian game," Bombers GM Joe Mack said in a statement. "His addition will continue to strengthen our depth at the all important quarterback position."
Backup Steven Jyles will start at quarterback when Winnipeg (1-2) faces the Edmonton Eskimos (0-3) on Saturday. Incumbent Buck Pierce will miss the contest with a knee injury.
