A well-known Hamilton broadcaster, who was the radio voice of the Hamilton Tiger-Cats for 21 years, could be ready to run for the mayor of the city.

Whether or not Hamilton politician Bob Bratina goes through with his plan to run for the job, he has added another element to the running soap opera of the city and its debate over a potential new stadium for the Tiger-Cats.

Bratina told the Hamilton Spectator on Monday, that he is heavily weighing the possibility of challenging current mayor Fred Eisenberger, who is at the heart of the stadium standoff.

Eisenberger prefers a downtown site, while Ticats’ owner Bob Young prefers a site closer to the highway. He has indicated that the Ticats will not play at Ivor Wynne Stadium, at the end of the 2011 season if the stadium issue is not resolved to his team’s satisfaction.

That has led to speculation that the team may be on the move, though Young has been careful not to say that.

A 15,000-seat stadium has been proposed for soccer use, as part of the 2015 Pan American Games in southern Ontario. But the provincial government may not provide funding, if the stadium does not fulfill the legacy terms, which states the structure must be used for professional football.

Hamilton city council will discuss the controversial issue on Tuesday. This time, to discuss a potential new site, one that Young will support.

"I really have to, I think, seriously consider (running for mayor) because of the state of the city right now," Bratina said. "Obviously, I have to make that decision in the next few days."

The deadline for candidate registration is Sept. 10.

"It would be worth running, if I lost or not, to confront (the mayor)…and the electorate with the real issues that have to be resolved, and one is a change of the power structure at city hall because that's the root of our problems."
