Esks add Bates
The Edmonton Eskimos have acquired non-import offensive guard Kelly Bates from the Saskatchewan Roughriders in exchange for a selection in the 2014 CFL Canadian Draft, the club announced Tuesday.
Bates, a nine-year CFL veteran, signed as a free agent with the Riders in February 2010. He was placed on the nine-game injured list on June 24 after sustaining an elbow strain in training camp. In nine years in the CFL, the Humboldt, Saskatchewan native has been on the rosters of the BC Lions, Winnipeg Blue Bombers and the Saskatchewan Roughriders.
Drafted by the Lions in the 4th round (32nd overall) in the 2001 CFL Canadian Draft, Bates moved into a starting role in 2005 and went on to become a 2007 West Division and CFL All-Star. Traded to Winnipeg on 2009, Kelly started in six games with the Bombers.
