The Calgary Stampeders will know later today the full extent of the injury suffered by backup quarterback Drew Tate, in the fourth quarter of a 37-22 victory over the Edmonton Eskimos on Friday in Edmonton.
Tate appeared to injure his non-throwing shoulder when two Eskimos players landed on him in the fourth quarter. Tate underwent an MRI after the game.
The Stamps only have three quarterbacks -- Henry Burris, voted last year's Most Outstanding Player in the CFL, and rookie Brad Sinopoli, a Canadian who starred with the University of Ottawa Gee-Gees -- on their current roster.
The Stamps selected Sinopoli, a Peterborough native, in the fourth round, 29th overall, in this year's Canadian Football League Draft. In 2010, he won the Hec Crighton Trophy as the top university player in Canada with a school record 2,756 passing yards and 22 touchdowns in eight games.
The Stamps indicated prior to the start of training camp that Sinopoli may make the starting roster for the regular season because the team would likely only keep three quarterbacks pending cap room.
With Tate's status uncertain and the league-deadline for roster cuts at 3 p.m. Eastern time today, Sinopoli will not only have cracked the starting roster but he may have moved up to second on the depth chart and the Stamps may need to sign another quarterback.
Tate re-signed with Calgary after last season, rather than try free agency.
