Calgary @ Toronto

Game Recap: Argos 31, Stampeders 29

On paper, this game should have been no contest. The Stamps were still trying to fight for first place while the Argos had already been eliminated from the playoffs.

It was the Argos who struck first as Cory Boyd scored on a nice TD run in the first quarter, while the 'D' also contributed with a pick 6 by Byron Parker.

Quarterback Steven Jyles did not have a great game, throwing four interceptions. However, he did have some timely drives and some great performances by his receivers.

On the otherside of the ball, Henry Burris only threw for 65 yards in the first half before getting replaced by Drew Tate in the second half. The Stamps responded immediately after this move. Trailing 28-9, the Stamps clawed back, eventually taking a 29-28 lead.

The Argos were able to get a drive together with a questionable PI call and get into Noel Prefontaine field goal range. On the last play of the game, Prefontaine kicked the game-winning field goal.

It was quite amazing to see the effort by an Argo team that has no chance in making the playoffs.

The question in Calgary now is whether there is a QB controversy?

Winnipeg @ Edmonton

Game Recap: Eskimos 24, Bombers 10

This game featured the first place teams from both divisions.

Ricky Ray is getting his groove back. On the opening offensive play of the game, Ray hooked up with Jason Armstead on a long bomb. The end result was a nine-yard TD run by Jerome Messam.

Throughout the game, both defences played well. I felt the Bomber D-line would really get after Ray and the Eskimo offence.

In reality, though, it was the Edmonton 'D' that made the difference in this game. They were able to sack Pierce on five different occasions, and also had three key interceptions.

Overall, the Eskimos played a solid game. All the receivers were involved and Jerome Messam had another solid game.

The Eskimos are sitting in first place in the West, and if they keep progressing, they will be one playoff game away from representing the West in the Grey Cup.

As for the Bombers, they have now lost three of their last four games. After a fast start, they have really struggled as of late.

Buck Pierce has been throwing too many interceptions lately, and the receiving corp isn't really helping him out either.

The biggest factor in their struggles is that opposing teams are finding more effective ways to attack their defence.

The Bombers still have to face the Als and Stamps in two of their last three games.

Their chances of hosting a home playoff game are still very good. But the first place bye week is getting much tighter with the Als breathing down their throats.

Hamilton @ Montreal

Game Recap: Als 27, Ticats 25

This was a huge game for both teams as they are both fighting for playoff positioning. With a Hamilton win, it would've tightened up the East division standings.

This game was a defensive battle with both teams stalling in the red zone and settling for field goals.

There were a few questionable calls that really hurt the Ticats.

Things got exciting in the fourth quarter. With the Als winning 27-12, Hamilton went to work. Kevin Glenn scored on a nice TD run with less than 10 minutes in the game.

On a critical third down for the Als, they chose to gamble with the ball in their own end. McPheeson got stuffed on a QB sneak by the Hamilton defence and turned the ball over on downs. The result was a TD pass by Quinton Porter to Dave Stala with one minute remaining on the clock.

The TD made the score 27-25.

On the two-point convert attempt Chip Cox broke up a pass to Aaron Kelly. After watching the replay, it was apparent that a flag should have been thrown on Cox for PI.

The Ticats must be very disappointed about letting this game slip away. They had plenty of chances but made too many mistakes.

The Als squandered a comfortable lead late in the game.

My question is: why attempt a third-and-one from your own 43 with less than two minutes to play? Both teams officially made the playoffs. All that's left is to see where everyone finishes in the standings.

B.C. @ Saskatchewan

Game Recap: Lions 29, Riders 18

Paul McCallum and Chris Milo combined for 10 field goals in the game.

The Riders were officially eliminated from the playoffs with their fourth straight loss and have not scored a TD in their last four games.

Ridiculous.

This is basically the same team that has represented the West in three of the last four Grey Cups.

The Riders now have a long off-season to figure out what went wrong this year. Some tough decisions will need to be made on some veteran players.

The B.C. Lions are the hottest team in the CFL. After starting the season with five straight losses, the Lions have now won eight straight and now sit in a first place tie with Edmonton.

This game was a defensive battle. The Riders actually lead throughout the first three quarters, but their inability to score TD's eventually caught up with them.

Arland Bruce scored on a long catch and run of 72 yards for the first TD of the game with under eight minutes left to give the Lions a 19-18 lead. The Riders were unable to respond.

The Lions went right back to work, Lulay connected with Andrew Harris for another long catch and run TD, essentially sealing the victory for the BC Lions.

This game was a matchup between two teams going in different directions.

The challenge for Ken Miller will be to get his players to finish this season on a strong note.
