The Calgary Stampeders confirmed on Tuesday they've traded quarterback Henry Burris to the Hamilton Tiger-Cats for quarterback Kevin Glenn, offensive lineman Mark Dewit and a conditional draft pick.
"Kevin Glenn has thrown for 5,000 yards in a season twice and he has proven to be one of the best quarterbacks in this league," Calgary head coach/GM John Hufnagel said in a statement. "It's also exciting to bring Mark Dewit into the fold, a local kid who did an excellent job filling in at centre last season with Hamilton and will start training camp competing at that position."
Burris finished last season as the backup to Drew Tate, who has extended his current contract with the Stamps. Although it hasn't been announced, sportsnet.ca has indicated it's a three-year deal.
"Henry Burris is a proven winner. He's a very athletic quarterback with an incredibly strong arm that will bring leadership and experience to our team. Henry possesses all the attributes that we are looking for as the leader of our offence and we're very excited to see him in Black and Gold," said Ticats general manager Bob O'Billovich.
Burris has apparently agreed to restructure his salary of more than $400,000 to $300,000, but will receive a $100,000 signing bonus, sources tell Sporstnet.ca. He was due a signing bonus of $60,000 on February 1.
"I'm excited to be coming to a first class organization like the Tiger-Cats and looking forward to playing in front of one of the best fanbases in the league. This team has a very bright future and I'm eager to be a part of it. My family and I would like to thank the Stampeders organization and their fans for everything they have done for us during my career in Calgary. We made a lot of great memories in Calgary, and we're looking forward to competing for another championship in Hamilton," said Burris.
Burris was voted the Most Outstanding Player in the Canadian Football League in 2010, but his play dramatically tailed off after the eighth game of the season. He ostensibly became Tate's backup in the final three games and the playoffs, which the Stamps lost in the Western Semi-Finals. Burris played in the game, but did little to turn around his team's lackluster play, although Tate struggled in his first post-season game as a starter.
The Ticats are currently in need of a head coach and have narrowed their search to two, although they plan to ask the Buffalo Bills for permission to talk to quarterbacks coach George Cortez, who has a long history in the CFL, in particular with the Stamps and Burris. Winnipeg defensive co-ordinator Tim Burke is the leading candidate if Cortez is out of the picture.
Glenn had issues last season with head coach Marcel Bellefeuille, who was fired after the season.
