Calixte staying in Calgary

The Calgary Stampeders have signed veteran linebacker Marc Calixte to a contract extension.

CALGARY -- The Calgary Stampeders have signed veteran linebacker Marc Calixte to a contract extension.

Calixte dressed for seven games last year but missed the final 10 regular-season games due to injury. He returned for the West Division semifinal, a 33-19 loss to the Edmonton Eskimos.

Calixte recorded six special-team tackles in 2011.

"We don't ever underestimate the importance and value of strength on special teams," head coach and general manager John Hufnagel said Monday in a release. "Marc is as effective a special-teams player as you can find in the CFL and it's great that he will be back for a 10th season."

Over his career, Calixte has played in 138 regular-season games and nine playoff games. The six-foot 205-pound Montreal native won a Grey Cup with the Stampeders in 2008.

"I'm proud to have been a member of the Stampeders for my entire CFL career," Calixte said. "I'm looking forward to my 10th season in Calgary and another opportunity to return to the Grey Cup game."

Calixte, who has 88 special-teams tackles over his career, was the seventh overall pick in the 2003 CFL Canadian Draft.
