WINNIPEG -- The Winnipeg Blue Bombers re-signed backup quarterback Joey Elliott on Wednesday.

The six-foot-three 216-pound Elliott was scheduled to become a free agent Feb. 16.

"Joey is an athletic quarterback with great potential in this league," Bombers general manager Joe Mack said in a statement. "He is a young, enthusiastic player, who is a great team guy and has the leadership qualities you look for in a quarterback."

Elliott began last season as the backup to starter Buck Pierce but suffered a season-ending knee injury in a 21-20 loss to the Calgary Stampeders on July 14.

He has appeared in four games -- including two starts -- with Winnipeg the last two seasons, completing 45-of-91 passes for 522 yards and two TDs.
