The Toronto Argonauts are putting on a recruiting push to sign Jamaal Westerman, a veteran NFL linebacker who under new rules would be classified as a Canadian player.
While CFL sources say the B.C. Lions also have interest in Westerman, the veteran linebacker is in Toronto and they hope to get a deal done.
Westerman, 30, was born in the United States, but he played his high school football in Brampton, Ont. (Notre Dame), before accepting a scholarship with Rutgers.
Westerman played his first three pro seasons with the New York Jets before bouncing on and off six different NFL rosters.
