Calgary Stampeders star running back Jon Cornish will miss his team’s Week 13 game against the Montreal Alouettes.
The team announced Friday on Twitter that the reigning CFL Most Outstanding Player and top Canadian won’t make the trip to Montreal in order to recover from “nagging injuries.”
Cornish missed several games earlier in the season while recovering from a concussion he suffered in Week 1, but him sitting out of Sunday’s game isn’t concussion-related.
“I’ve been playing football at the level I want to play, but to continue playing at that level, I needed this week off,” Cornish told reporters Friday in Calgary. “I’ve had a few things accumulate playing some tough teams and needed some time. I would say this is more precautionary than anything.”
The 29-year-old has racked up a whopping 587 rushing yards on just 75 carries (an average of 7.8 yards per carry) and four touchdowns. He also has 95 receiving yards and added a game-winning touchdown against the Argos in Week 12.
The Stampeders will also be without starting quarterback Bo Levi Mitchell, who sprained his left ankle and injured his knee last week. Backup Drew Tate will get the start under centre.
Sitting with a CFL-best record of 10-1, the Stampeders are still favoured to beat the Alouettes, who are tied for second in the East despite a 3-8 record.
