The Ottawa RedBlacks are taking the CFL’s “Signature Uniforms” to a whole new level.

The team unveiled a special third jersey Monday as well as a new plaid helmet.

“The new jersey and the signature uniform put the red in RedBlacks,” Jeff Hunt, president of RedBlacks’ parent company OSEG Sports, said in a press release. “It’s also another connection to the history of Ottawa/Gatineau as a region founded by the lumber industry, just like our ‘R’ logo with its sawblade background.”

The new RedBlacks look will debut when the team hosts the Calgary Stampeders on Aug. 24.

The Signature Uniforms were a league initiative that started 18 months ago in which the CFL worked with Reebok to create new uniforms fans and players could get excited about.

“With new stars emerging on the field, new stadiums dotting the CFL landscape, and new fans joining our loyal supporters, today’s CFL is poised for a bright and bold future,” CFL Commissioner Mark Cohon stated in a press release earlier this month. “These new uniforms capture that spirit and reflect our momentum. It’s going to be a lot of fun to see our teams proudly wear them and our fans react to them.”

Each team will don their new uniforms twice in 2014. So far this season, only the Saskatchewan Roughriders, Toronto Argonauts and B.C. Lions (who debuted their Signature Uniform last season) have worn their new uniforms.
